Koh Yiak Kheng

In addition to the significance of celebrating Singapore’s Bicentennial, 2019 is also a very special year for all of us at Seng Kang Secondary School as we celebrate our school’s 21st Anniversary since its establishment in 1999. This signifies that the school has arrived at an important milestone in our journey of educational excellence. It is time for all of us to do our best as a mature school to deliver the outcomes of education confidently. As educators, we owe it to our children. Their future lies in our hands. Their success is our achievement. We will do whatever it takes to fulfill our mission to develop our students into Global Citizens and Learners for Life.

We are happy to share with you that the 2018 batch of students have done the school proud by doing exceptionally well in their National Examinations.

Both the Normal Academic (NA) and Normal Technical (NT) Course students achieved breakthrough results in the N-Level Examination with significant improvement compared to past years. The percentage of NA students qualifying for Sec 5 this year is 83.3%, a figure significantly higher than the National Average of 72.1%. We also achieved a record-breaking percentage of students (65.4%) qualifying for the Direct Entry Scheme to Polytechnic Programme (DPP).

Our Express Course students have also shown great improvement in the O-Level Examination results with 82.3% achieving at least 5 O-Level Passes, compared to 71.9% in 2017. As a result of this improvement, the students’ eligibility to Polytechnics has risen from 88.8% (2017) to 92.1% (2018). Correspondingly, the eligibility to Junior Colleges has risen from 33.8% (2017) to 38.4% (2018).

Besides the school’s progress in academic performance, we are also proud to witness the great achievements by our CCA groups. Many of our CCA groups have given their all-out effort in 2018 and were, in fact, looking forward to another year of great advancement and victory this year. And so they did!

First of all, our Sports CCAs have continued their journey of excellence this year with 3 out of 4 Hockey Teams clinching the National Top 4 position in the National Schools Games and the Football B-Division Boys winning the National Top 16 position in the School Premier League. In fact, our Football Team was specially identified and invited to take part in the FAS Centre of Excellence League together with other Youth Teams from the S-League Club.

For the first time in Seng Kang Secondary School’s history, every single one of our five Performing Arts Groups has achieved the Certificate of Distinction in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) 2019 Arts Presentation. In fact, we are extremely happy to share that this is the first Distinction Award received by the Band, Dance and Drama.

We are equally proud to share that our NCC unit has made it to the Top 3 positions in Precision Display Squad (PDS) Zone Competition for the very first time in SKSS’ history. Our NPCC and Red Cross Units achieved breakthrough results by winning their first Gold Award in their respective units, while the Girl Guides continued to sustain their excellent performance by winning the unit Gold Award for the 15th consecutive year!

In addition to the above achievements, the school is presented the BCA Green Mark Gold Award in recognition of the school’s supporting infrastructure, processes and programmes that promote environment protection and sustainability. The school has also been conferred the NS Mark (Gold) Accreditation as well as the Total Defence Award, under the category of National Service Advocate Award for Organizations 2019. This is a national pinnacle award presented by the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Home Affairs to recognize our school for our excellent processes in role modelling the importance of Total Defence and National Education, as well as our good HR practices in supporting NS.

While we are happy to witness the numerous achievements across different areas which are clear testament of the growing culture of excellence in the school, we will continue to place greater emphasis and importance in character development and inculcation of our school core values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. This serves to empower our staff and students to advance forward confidently amidst any challenges.

What I have highlighted are just snapshots of our progress and achievements. We hope our school website will be able to provide you with a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamic curriculum and programmes offered at Seng Kang Secondary School. Happy surfing!
